As the weather warms, the most dangerous days to drive are ahead of us. Spring is a time when the roads start to get busier and many of us commit road trips over a long weekend. Performing a little car maintenance can help ensure your vehicle is safe to drive and minimize your risk of breaking down while travelling to a family event or while on vacation.

Check the tires – As the outside temperature increase, the air pressure in your tires increases. During this time of year, it’s important to check your tires for wear and tear and test the air pressure. Tire blowouts are more common in the summer, and losing a tire while driving is a dangerous situation.

Top up the fluids in the car – The beginning of spring is a great time to have the fluids in your car checked and filled. Make time to get the oil changed and be sure to check the antifreeze, brake fluid, transmission, and windshield washer fluid.

Wash the vehicle – Road salt and ice melt can cause corrosion and rust on the body and underside of your vehicle. Once the roads are clear of salt and sand, it’s a good idea to wash the inside and outside of your car. For added protected, consider waxing your vehicle.

Test the battery – If your battery is a few years old, now is a good time to have it tested. Batteries can struggle throughout the winter, diminishing their ability to charge and be charged by your alternator.

Replace the wiper blades – Your wiper blades are probably looking a bit worse for wear after months of clearing away rain and frost. Perhaps they’re smearing water across the windshield or just not doing their job. If cleaning the blades doesn’t do the trick, then it’s time to replace the blades to prepare for spring and summer rainstorms.
