Ways to Keep Your Dog Safe While Driving

Protect your four-legged friend when you’re behind the wheel.

As safe drivers, we always buckle ourselves in and our children before starting the engine. But what about the safety of our dog? We love our dogs as part of the family and we want them with us all the time, even when going for a ride. If we don’t take proper precautions and care, taking our dogs in the car with us could have some devastating effects. Here are some tips on how to keep your pooch safe while driving.

Know the Law

In numerous states, it’s illegal for a dog to ride in your lap or loose in the flatbed of a truck. In many states, it’s required that any dog in the car be restrained with a seatbelt hardness or in a cage. Be sure you know your local law before heading out on the road.

Buckle Up

The safest way to transport your pups is to secure them with their own seatbelts. Not only does it contain your excited four-legged friend, but it keeps them safe in the event of an accident – which could severely injure or kill an unrestrained dog.

Teach

As soon as you get your dog, take him or her on short and regular car rides to fun places (a.k.a. not the vet!). Keeping him or her familiar with the car as a pleasant experience will help when on longer journeys.

Take Breaks

Once you’re in the car, stop every couple of hours to give your dog water and exercise. Ensure that you have the car stocked with their food, water, bowls, treats, chew toys, towels, and any unnecessary medications, too.

Ensure Comfort

When driving with a dog, always pack his or her favorite toy or pillow to give your pet a sense of familiarity and comfort in the crate.
