How You Can Give Back During Giving Season

Make an impact on your local community by giving back this holiday season.

The holidays are a time for festive family gatherings, spending time with loved ones, and gift-giving. However, the season shouldn’t be dedicated to all things material. While you may be eager to get your hands on the new iPhone, we should all take a step back to realize how lucky we are, and think of ways how we can help to spread holiday cheer!

While giving back to the community should be a priority year-round, there are certainly more opportunities to get active during the winter months. Here are a few ways to get started.

Send holiday cards to active duty military and veterans.

Members of the military sacrifice a lot for our country. Sending festive holiday cards to active military members abroad can help them to remind them that they are not forgotten and that America is with them. It’s a thoughtful way to give back that’s low-cost.

Participate in a clothing drive.

Winter coats, thermals, and thick socks never go amiss when it comes to giving to the needy in the cooler months. With nearly one in every 30 children homeless in the US, go through your wardrobe and see if you can donate any unwanted belongings.

Volunteer at a soup kitchen.

Cold weather can be dangerous, and that’s when homeless shelters find themselves faced with inadequate space. Soup kitchens rely heavily on volunteers, especially during winter. Whether you can donate food or volunteer a couple of hours a week, you can make a significant impact for those people.

Donate to a pet shelter.

When you’re doing your holiday feast grocery shop, pick up a couple of cans of pet food and drop them off at your local animal shelter. If you have blankets, toys, and leashes, too, pet shelters will often happily receive donations.
